Samsung Galaxy Gear Smartwatch To Debut Ahead of Apple iWatch

samsunggalaxygearvsiWatch_webSamsung Galaxy Gear Smartwatch To Debut Ahead of Apple iWatch. The Samsung Galaxy Gear Smartwatch is scheduled to debut at a special Samsung event, Unpacked 2013, on September 4th only days before the September 10th date set by Apple for the new iPhone/iPad news (and where it was rumored Apple would debut their iWatch).  The Samsung surprise is scheduled to coincide with the IFA technology trade show in Berlin ( a CES-like affair).  Unpacked is also likely to be the platform to showcase the new Samsung Galaxy Note III .  The new Note is expected to pack a performance/speed punch (possibly with a quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor) and run on Android 4.3.

Some of the things we know about the Samsung Galaxy Gear (mostly rumors at this point, of course):

  • The name: Galaxy Gear (from Samsung’s patent application).
  • Android 4.3 Jelly Bean
  • Standard LED display (vs. Apple, rumored to be working on flexible displays for all its wearable tech products).
  • Bluetooth
  • Apps: likely S Health. S Voice and integration with social apps like Facebook and Twitter.
  • GPS
  • Call, Text, Email and surf the Internet
  • Water Resistant

And just to rub a little more salt in Apple’s wounds, Samsung will be live streaming the event on the Samsung YouTube Channel and in Times Square, NYC.  For those of us who have struggled with access to Apple’s press events  (even on their own website), Samsung’s “community” karma is truly a welcome change.  Engage and reward your consumer.  What a concept!

Question: will you purchase a smartwatch – or smartphone that looks like a watch? Which one?
